ampersand.
is a four-piece pop band from San Francisco whose music recalls the great
guitar-pop bands of the eighties and early nineties. With twenty-three
minutes of short, catchy songs propelled by one of the best indie-pop
drummers around today, this debut eight song CD EP is the perfect addition
to the music collections of fans of the Wedding Present, the Pastels,
the Swirlies, Boyracer, Flying Nun Records, etc. Together for nearly three
years, this is ampersand.'s first release (Tokyo Girl was included on
the CD accompanying issue #15 of the Japanese magazine Beikoku Ongaku).

Highly recommended!! This is awesome jangly west coast pop! Keeping the
perfect pop song length (under 3 minutes), they propel their upbeat catchy
jangle guitar pop through 22 minutes of soon-to-be-classics. Male and
female vocals glide alongside sometimes-clean, sometimes noisy, always
excellent guitarwork and awesome drumming. For fans of Poundsign, the
Wedding Present, the Pastels, the Swirlies, Boyracer, Flying Nun Records,
etc.

On <<<<<<<< (yes, that's what it's called), Ampersand wear their hearts
on their collective sleeves. The EP plays like a tribute to great '80s
'indie pop' (we just called it 'underground' then) stuff from the New
Zealand scene (the Chills, the Clean, the Bats), the Pastels, and early
Wedding Present. It's earnest jangle-pop played on strummed guitars with
few effects. The lyrics are all about failed relationships and broken
hearts but never sad or mopey. Melancholy maybe, but pleasantly upbeat
like the ocean when it's raining; not what you'd hope for, but you wouldn't
necessarily trade it away. I pulled this out with a stack of discs I was
sure I'd hate, and I feel like a dope. I just listened twice in a row.
